Mandarin Oriental to open luxury London hotel and residences in 2028

Mandarin Oriental is set to open a luxury development with 171 hotel guestrooms and 70 branded residences in London.

To be situated on London’s South Bank as part of Native Land’s Bankside Yards, the new development will be Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s third hotel in London following the opening of Mandarin Oriental Mayfair earlier this year.

In addition to four dining outlets and event spaces, the hotel will also comprise wellness and fitness facilities including a Spa at Mandarin Oriental, a 25m lap pool as well as a fitness centre.

The residences will feature a sky lobby lounge, private roof garden and parking and will offer residents access to the hotel facilities.

The property is scheduled to open in 2028 and is being developed by an international real estate consortium including Hotel Properties Ltd, Native Land Ltd and Amcorp Properties Berhad.

Why it matters

This development signals a sustained demand for high-end hospitality and residential offerings in global city centres, despite the uncertainties the hospitality sector has faced due to factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent economic instability.

It also highlights the ongoing trend of hotels offering branded residences, blurring the lines between hospitality and residential real estate. Furthermore, the mixed-use nature of the development with dining, wellness and fitness facilities, alongside residences, is indicative of the sector's evolution to deliver a comprehensive lifestyle experience.

Accor and Marriott are amongst those jumping on this train.

What they said

James Riley, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group said: “We are excited to announce the development of Mandarin Oriental Bankside, London, which will be a significant addition to the Bankside Yards development. We look forward to working with our partners to create a world-class hotel and branded residences that will undoubtedly become a landmark destination in London's South Bank.”

Alasdair Nicholls, chief executive of Native Land added: “The arrival of a Mandarin Oriental hotel and branded residences will be one of the most important elements in our intention to offer the very best amenities side-by-side with world-class cultural institutions, top-tier businesses and a rich and varied community. Such a respected global hospitality brand will positively impact not only the Bankside Yards development itself, but also the wider Bankside and South Bank area.”
