A Whole World of Local: Why Leadership in Hospitality Begins on the Ground

Euan McGlashan, Global Co-Founder & CEO, Valor Hospitality Partners

The greatest lessons in hospitality are rarely learned in boardrooms. They are discovered in airports at dawn and in hotel lobbies where the pulse of our industry is truly felt.

Travel has been one of the most powerful learning opportunities in this industry. When you move between cultures and communities, you see hospitality is not a concept; it’s a deep human connection that becomes emotion and you want to hold on to it. Every destination carries its own traditions and expectations of what it means to feel welcome. This sits at the heart of our business ethos: A Whole World of Local.

In many businesses, it can be easy to drift towards standardisation. In hospitality, brands expand and portfolios grow. Systems and processes bring efficiency, but they can also create sameness. And if we’re not careful, that sameness can quietly drain the very soul out of what we do. It needs to be challenged.

Status without the ‘quo’

Real leadership means recognising when the status quo no longer serves, and at Valor, we believe nothing should never become formulaic. We don’t have a one-size-fits all approach. Perfection can be the enemy of progress, because perfection often implies that nothing needs to change. And perfection is boring. The reality is the most exciting ideas in hospitality come from questioning norms rather than protecting them.

‘A Whole World of Local’ reflects a simple but powerful idea. While Valor operates across many regions, every property in our portfolio remains rooted to its community. Guests don’t travel for generic experiences; they travel to feel the uniqueness of a place - its soul and character.

That might be design choices that reflect local craftsmanship, a menu inspired by local heritage or regional produce, or a team member who shares local knowledge. These details create authenticity, and authenticity is what elevates a stay into a memory.

Creating authenticity doesn’t happen from afar. It requires leaders who are present, who spend time in properties, listen to their teams and understand the nuances of each location. Over the years, many of the best insights I’ve gained have come from walking through a hotel with the general manager, speaking with a housekeeper about guest preferences, or sitting down with a chef who is passionate about local ingredients, bartenders, servers, you name it. Titles dissolve. Those interactions mean everything.

These conversations reveal the realities behind the numbers and they remind us that hospitality is built by people. But they also often spark the ideas that move the industry forward - the small experiments, the bold tweaks; the willingness to try something different that eventually becomes tomorrow’s trend.

Evolving hospitality through innovation

At Valor, our people are the guardians of guest experiences and the ambassadors of the communities our hotels serve. Their knowledge and instincts shape how guests perceive a destination. As a leader, it’s my responsibility, but also my passion, to remain closely connected to those experiences. I personally become invested.

I’m not alone in that endeavour; our leaders are present, empathetic and connected to the realities of our people and our guests. They share a wealth of hands-on hospitality experience, and it is their insight and knowledge that determines the path we tread.

That spirit of curiosity and challenge is also what fuels SAVOR, our team and brand dedicated to culinary and beverage creativity. SAVOR came from a belief that food and drink should be an expression of place, culture and personality. By empowering chefs and teams to push creative boundaries, SAVOR combines authenticity with innovation. In many ways, it reflects a broader philosophy within Valor. We respect tradition, but we are not constrained by it. Hospitality evolves when we have the courage to ask ‘why not?’ and the willingness to try something new and different.

Protecting our ethos as we grow

As we grow, expansion for its own sake has never been the objective. Growth must be purposeful, sustainable and respectful. That’s where leadership presence is vital. When we engage with on-the-ground realities, our strategy becomes more relevant and our decisions become more human.

‘A Whole World of Local’ is therefore not just about guest experience; it is about building a company that understands and celebrates diversity. It means recognising that the expectations of a traveller in Edinburgh may differ from those of a guest in Atlanta or in Dubai or Africa. It means empowering local teams to bring their own perspective to global brands. And it means ensuring that every property reflects the personality of its destination.

This balance between scale and individuality is essential. Guests enjoy familiarity and reliability, but they also want discovery. They want the comfort of a trusted brand combined with the excitement of experiencing something genuinely local.

As we continue to expand, I will never compromise on our commitment to stay close to those moments. As leaders, we will continue to listen, learn and travel with curiosity, because the future of hospitality will not be shaped by those who simply follow trends; it will be shaped by those willing to challenge them.
