IHG Hotels & Resorts launches a new programme to tackle environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) goals. Named “Journey to Tomorrow” the series of commitments aims to make a positive difference to people, communities and planet over the next decade.
IHG’s CEO, Keith Barr said: “Journey to Tomorrow embodies IHG’s strengthened commitment to make sure we do what’s right, not just what’s needed. We want every IHG stakeholder to see that we’re on a journey to be successful in every sense of the word, and we are determined to contribute towards positive social and economic change, to stand up for key issues such as diversity, equity and inclusion, and human rights, and to make more responsible environmental choices”. He adds: “I believe that how we grow as a company and work to be a greater force for good are inextricably linked. So, we are empowering our colleagues, and working together with our hotel owners and our industry to help shape the future of responsible travel. It’s never been more crucial that we do.”
Karin Sheppard, SVP, Managing Director for Europe commented: “Now more than ever an emphasis is being placed on how consumers can travel better – with green credentials, reducing our carbon footprint and caring for the community being talking points.Everyone can change their behaviours and still enjoy travelling for both business and leisure, but it’s important for organisations to pave the way for travellers. That’s why we’ve launched ‘Journey to Tomorrow’ – IHG’s commitment to make sure we do what’s right, not just what’s needed, to make a positive difference for our people, communities and planet over the next decade.”
The commitments included in the programme were formed through an assessment process involving external experts, stakeholder consultation and industry collaboration, and with the UN Sustainable Development Goals in mind. They are based around five pillars:
- Champion a diverse culture where everyone can thrive
- Improve the lives of 30 million people in IHG's communities around the world
- Reduce energy use and carbon emissions in line with climate science
- Pioneer the transformation to a minimal waste hospitality industry
- Conserve water and help secure water access in those areas at greatest risk
Gloria Guevara, CEO & President, The World Travel & Tourism Council, commented: “The Travel & Tourism sector plays a huge role in enriching livelihoods and economies around the world, and we must ensure its growth contributes positively to the communities, natural ecosystems and cultural heritage upon which it depends. I’m pleased to see the clear, achievable, and actionable 10-year ambitions outlined in IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Journey to Tomorrow plan, which will help support the sustainable development of our sector”.
